Hero Datafile: Peter Parker, Identity Crisis (1998)

There are few more modern heroes I want to write up, but I really liked the idea of tackling this old gimmick for Spider-man from the 1998 story, Identity Crisis. It features a Peter Parker who can’t don the old red, black, and blue and having to play quadruple duty as a slew of new heroes to clear his name.

In 1998, Parker was having a bit of problems with the law. His nemsis, Norman Osborn, had framed Spider-man for murder and New York’s finest was on his trail. Something had to be done to clear the webhead’s name.

Peter got a great idea on what to do: he would take up a different identity so he could search for evidence to exonerate Spider-man. Unlike most heroes who would keep to one, Peter decided to take on four separate identities at once.

Dusk was a silent and serious mercenary who worked alongside Trapster. Using  suit he acquired from the negative zone, Peter was able to become one with the shadows and even glide for short distances.

Hornet was a team effort. Designed by his wife, Mary Jane, with weapons he modeled after Ben Reily’s webshooters and a flight pack designed by the Prowler. Playing up as a funny, young hero, similar to his normal outings as a hero, he managed to become a popular local hero.

Prodigy was a designed an “old fashioned” do-gooder. With no gear other than a bullet-proof vest, Peter relied on his innate physical abilities to fight crime. Keeping to a golden age personality, he didn’t just win hearts and minds, but the respect of even John Jonah Jameson.

Ricochet was born from a jacket Mary Jane bought Peter. A criminal-for-hire, Peter relied on his innate athleticism and some flying disks he installed into the suit. With street-smarts and a fast talking attitude, he was able to win the favor of a few of his old foes on his quest for evidence.

Peter didn’t just keep to one identity per adventure. On a few rare occasions, he would quickly get away to swap costumes to help keep the illusions that the heroes were separate people.
