Dragonball Heroic Roleplaying – Goku (Dragonball to Super)

Dragonball is one of the world’s most popular manga. The story of Goku is a cultural phenomenon in Japan, the USA, and, especially, South America. Oddly, it’s considered hard to play. A lot of that, though, comes from people exaggerating the character’s ability. If you can play Superman in a system, you can play these characters.

Of course, the other issue is that Dragonball uses vertical escalation. In other words, as the series goes on, the threats become bigger, stronger, and the characters rise to match it. Dragonball starts as a street level fantasy series. No, really. Go back to issue 1 and you’ll see. But it grows to a national series (Red Ribbon Army), planet-wide (King Piccolo), Intergalactic (Sayian Saga), Divine (Buu Saga), and, currently, inter-universal (Super).

That’s the crux in my opinion. It’s not how strong Goku is, it’s that Dragonball doesn’t have a status quo outside “big bad guy heroes need to train to beat.” Do you deal with stuff on a small scale or is there going to be 8 universes duking it out for their very universe’ survival.

I decided that, since it’s good at superheroes, why not take a crack at Dragonball in MHR. After all, it is just a superhero series. And, to be fair, superheroes change a lot in American comics too. Of course, they also have an easy status quo to reset to power-level-wise that Dragonball doesn’t have so this does add a challenge.

Being an idiot, I decided to stat out the Z-Warriors and their big bads at different stages of the series. Why does this make me an idiot? Because I already wrote out the rest of this article and found out this resulted in 11 Gokus alone.

Yikes!

But, hey, the other guys are going to get progressively easier.

To move on, the playbooks try to play it safe. If anything, I intentionally underestimated Goku’s abilities to ensure balance. Though, even then, he does become bonkers by the end. I mean, every episode of the tournament of power arc is one minute of in-universe time and their attacks ricochet out and could destroy entire universe from the vibrations alone. What I mean is: by Super, it’s impossible not to have Goku be a fucking truck.

To move on to the bio, the story of Goku is a familiar one to any comic book fan. Goku was a sayian, a warrior race under the tyrannical rule of Lord Freeza. His parents, Bardock and Gine, sensed something looming on the horizon and sent Goku off to a backwater planet. At worst, they could just come and get him later and they were sure to tell their other son, Radditz, of Goku’s destination.

The pair’s feelings were right and Lord Freeza, fearing the combined might of the Sayians and the myth of the Super Sayian, wiped out their species in a single attack.

Falling to Earth, Goku was found by a kindly hermit named Gohan who raised him to be a martial artist. After Gohan’s passing, he met a woman named Bulma who was on a quest to obtain the titular dragonballs, seven magic orbs that can grant a single wish.

Goku accompanied Bulma on her adventures and became a student of the world’s best martial artist and Gohan’s former teacher, Master Roshi. Honing his skills, he faced a series of dangerous opponents, including the dread King Piccolo. After defeating the demon king, he was welcomed by the God of Earth to train as the new Guardian of Earth.

Years later, Goku would marry a childhood friend, Chi Chi, and have a son he would name after his grandfather. The two enjoyed a quiet life together. That is, until, Radditz arrived. Revealing his origins, Radditz introduced Goku to the wider universe and a series of new opponents.

Eventually, this would lead him to Namek where he would find and battle Lord Freeza and avenge the Sayian race by becoming the Legendary Super Sayian.

Returning to Earth, he would eventually pass on the mantle of Guardian of Earth to his son and pass on to Otherworld, the afterlife. However, when a great enough threat arouse that had once slain gods, only Goku, returned to life, could stop it, reclaiming the mantle.

Eventually, the God of Destruction, Lord Beerus, would arrive to Earth, intrigued by a myth of a God among Super Sayians. Goku, despite obtaining this power and ascending to Godhood himself, he lost to Beerus and became a pupil of Beerus’ teacher, Whis.

This decision would force him into many adventures involving the divine bureaucracy. Culminating, currently, in the Tournament of Power: a battle among lesser universes to decide which one universe would survive.

Despite all of this, Goku has never really changed. He is still the naive little country boy who just likes a good fight. He’s become a father, saved the world, and watched universes die, but that never changed about him.

Ozzaru

Goku’s tail is proof of his sayian heritage. When he views full moon light, he transforms into the mighty Ozzaru, a giant ape with extreme power. He has no control in this state and will attack friend and foe. When Ozzaru is activated, Goku uses the doom pool instead of his affiliation die and becomes a Watcher character. If the Doom Pool is reduced to two dice, someone gets a “destroy the moon” or “cut off the tail” complication to over a d12, Ozzaru deactivates. If Goku lost his tail, the Watcher must spend at least a d10 from the doom pool to grow it back before they can ever re-activate Ozzaru.
